Feature matching for multi-epoch historical aerial images

Historical imagery is characterized by high spatial resolution and stereo-scopic acquisitions, providing a valuable resource for recovering 3D land-cover information. Accurate geo-referencing of diachronic historical images means self-calibration remains bottleneck because the difficulty to find sufficient amount feature correspondences under evolving landscapes. In this research, we present fully automatic approach detecting between taken at different times (i.e., inter-epoch), without auxiliary data required. Based on relative orientations computed within same epoch intra-epoch), obtain DSMs (Digital Surface Model) incorporate them in rough-to-precise matching. The method consists of: (1) an inter-epoch matching roughly co-register (i.e, Helmert transformation), followed (2) precise using original RGB images. innate ambiguity latter largely alleviated narrowing down search space co-registered data. With features, refine image quantitatively evaluate results with DoD (Difference DSMs), ground check points, (3) quantifying displacement due earthquake. We demonstrate that our method: can automatically georeference images; effectively mitigate systematic errors induced poorly estimated camera parameters; robust drastic scene changes. Compared state-of-the-art, improves georeferencing accuracy factor 2. proposed methods are implemented MicMac, free, open-source photogrammetric software.
